The
Minneapolis Loppet Luminary, 2009
by Michael
Kiesow Moore
By thousands the people of the city
gathered at the Lake of the Isles on skis;
they followed the path of luminaries,
each ice-clad candle a dancing deity.
In wonderment the people blessed the night—
this newly made clan of dogs, fire jugglers,
bundled children, and other snow lovers—
as they skied under the stars’ placid light.
Bright Venus and a curl of moon lit the isles,
and like a noble lord of festival,
Orion graced this icy carnival,
where friends and strangers traded lavish smiles.
