Poetry
In Memoriam: Bill Kreidler
by Michael Kiesow Moore

Did Hades not know whom he took away?
That you were belov’d he could not be blind;
plucked long before you ought—who then can say
why those more deserving he could not find.
Did Charon know who stepped into his boat?
Did he address you humbly on bent knees?
Or was he ignorant and, instead, dote
on lesser stars, Hector and Achilles?
To the Elysian fields you were led,
no doubt; but did Apollo sing some ode
while all our friends who deemed you neglected,
told the gathered what honor you bestowed?
We on this side of the dim, hiding veil
know who is gone, and in night’s cold arms, wail.
