Wednesday of the Month (January - October) Facilitator: Michael Kiesow Moore The Loft’s Peace and Social Justice Writers Group consciously explores the nature of peace, and through our activities aims to renew and maintain a sense of hope for the future. We gather monthly, and by sharing our writing and discussing works by writers who inspire and move us toward action, we endeavor to refine our talents and use our creative craft to promote peace and sustainable justice in our world. The group is open to all experience levels and writing genres. See the Loft website for more information. In the coming year we will read together "Creating True Peace: Ending Violence in Yourself, Your Family, Your Community, and the World" by Thich Nhat Hanh. Please note that the group does not meet in November and December.
Artwork by Jan Severson In August, 2007 we hosted the first Art of Peace festival at the Loft. We explored such questions as, How is peace a creative act? How does making art lead to inner peace, and are creativity and peace-making part of the same process? Panel discussants included Rosanne Bane, Heid Erdrich, Deborah Keenan, and Victoria Safford. Workshops were offered on this theme, and concluded with performances and readings by Victoria Safford, Solidarity Kids, Pangea World Theater, Rosanne Bane, Chris Kliesen Wehrman and members of Cicada Rising Theatre Company, and Voices for Peace. We presented the second Art of Peace festival on September 21, 2008, the International Day of Peace. To get a taste of how the day went, and the gallery show we hung that included work by Iraqi artists see our peace art gallery. This year we hosted an International Day of Peace reading by members of the peace writers group on September 26, 2009 at The Loft. By meeting at the crossroads of peace, creativity, and imagination we seek to inspire hope for the future, deepen connections to one’s self and others, and inspire participants to use their creativity for peace. |
